Assistant Manager

 

Goodside Grocery Co-op of Sheboygan is owned and operated by its members.  Its mission is to make nutritious, quality, and local goods accessible to the community through the operation of a cooperatively-run grocery facility in Downtown Sheboygan.

Goodside Grocery is seeking a qualified candidate for assistant manager of its operations.  This is a part-time, hourly management position that reports directly to the General Manager.   

Purpose

To support the General Manager (GM) in overseeing all aspects of daily Co-op operations and meet organizational goals established by the Board of Directors while remaining within Board-defined limits and aligned with the Co-op’s mission statement.

Job summary

  • Assist GM and fill-in for GM as necessary.

  • Provide customer service, to include operating the Point of Sale system.

  • Receive, process returns, price, prepare, and merchandise designated products.

  • Help supervise store operations, to include volunteer training and performance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

General

  6. Perform store cleaning and maintain cleanliness.

Customer Service

  1. Exceed service expectations of both internal and external customers.

  2. Ensure a welcoming environment for all in accordance with Goodside’s customer service standards, to include (but not limited):

    1. Deal effectively with difficult or emotional customer situations.

    2. Anticipate and meet customer needs.

    3. Respond quickly to requests for service and assistance.

  1. Treat all customers, co-workers, and volunteers fairly, consistently, and with respect.

  2. Welcome members and customers, answer their questions, help them locate items, and provide advice or recommendations.

  3. Operate scanners, scales, cash registers, and other electronics.

  4. Balance the cash register and generate reports for credit and debit sales.

  5. Accept payments, ensuring all prices and quantities are accurate and provide a receipt to every customer.

  6. Process refunds and exchanges, resolving complaints.

  7. Bag or wrap purchases to ensure safe transport.

  8. Following Goodside procedures regarding coupons and gift cards.

  9. Maintaining a clean workspace.

Job Specific

  1. Unload, separate, verify counts, accept deliveries, apply for credits and coordinate return of damaged/miss-picked products.

  2. Receive, process returns, price, prepare and merchandise designated products to achieve goals for sales, margin, inventory turns, and labor expense.

  3. Ensure accurate, up-to-date pricing and product information for designated products in Square (current Point of Sale system) and on item and shelf signage.

  4. Help the GM train, supervise, and evaluate volunteers.

  5. Clean shelving, refrigeration equipment, storage areas, receiving areas, office areas, and display areas according to established practices.

  6. Document and report any equipment maintenance or safety concerns to GM.

  7. Perform other tasks assigned by the GM including, but not limited to, filling-in as required.

  1. Occasional Exposure: outdoor weather conditions (e.g. receiving)

    1. Wet and/or humid conditions (e.g. reach-in coolers)

    2. Moving loaded carts/pallets in and out of storage/retail areas

  3. Constant Exposure

    1. Background music

    2. Food odors, grain and spice dust, food allergens (e.g. proximity tree nuts)

  1. Ability to document high school graduation or GED

  2. Outstanding customer service skills

  3. Attention to detail and good organizational skills

  4. Analytical and math skills

  5. Ability to handle multiple demands, work under time pressures, and meet deadlines

  6. Willingness to be open, to learn, and to take on new responsibilities

  7. Demonstrate objectivity, neutrality and calmness under pressure

  8. Ability to follow through on systems and procedures

  9. Regular, predictable attendance

  10. Effective communication skills in English

  11. Ability to manage confidential information in a professional and responsible manner.

  12. Computer proficiency (e.g. keyboard experience, email)

  13. Ability to read and comprehend instructions

  14. Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment

  15. Ability to be flexible and to adapt to changing conditions quickly

  16. Demonstrated ability to follow through on commitments

  17. Ability to supervise and direct staff, as requested

  18. Ability to prioritize tasks

  19. Experience in retail sales, preferably in produce/natural foods

  20. Available to work evenings and weekends.

Essential Physical Requirements

  1. Ability to frequently lift and move up to 60 lbs throughout shift.

  2. Frequently stand, walk, squat, bend, sit, balance and rotate body.

  3. Occasionally ascend and descend stairs, ladders and step stools.

  4. Ability to type and manipulate objects on computers for extended periods of time.

Remuneration

  • Hourly rate starts at $15/hr

  • Possible incentive program
